Not a Reader, but a Listener

Shifting the frame from “reader” to “listener” might be the better approach. Listener is broader.

When we read, our internal voice reads the words aloud in our head. This shows that writing is fundamentally recorded speech waiting to be decoded.

When we think of listening, we consider pace of syntax, structure of cadence, and design rhythm. “Listener” bridges the gap between cold text on a page and an active human conversation. Listener reminds me that communication is an auditory and interpersonal experience, even across print.
